Fit Heart, Balanced Cholesterol
Cholesterol is not something you either have or do not have. It is a lipid every cell uses, carried through the bloodstream inside particles. "Balanced blood lipids" refers to the relative amounts of those particles, which is why a lipid panel reports several numbers rather than one.
What a lipid panel measures
Cholesterol does not dissolve in blood, so it travels packaged in lipoproteins.
- LDL (low-density lipoprotein) carries cholesterol from the liver out to the tissues that use it.
- HDL (high-density lipoprotein) collects cholesterol from tissues and returns it to the liver.
- Triglycerides are the body's main storage form of fat and circulate as an energy substrate.
- Total cholesterol is a sum figure and says little on its own.
These values shift with diet, activity, body composition, genetics and age, and they are read together and in context by a doctor.
Why circulation is discussed alongside lipids
Blood vessels are not passive tubes. Their inner lining, the endothelium, regulates vessel tone by releasing signaling molecules, nitric oxide being the best known, so vessels relax and blood flow adjusts to demand. Endothelial function is measured separately from lipid values, which is why cardiovascular research looks at both.
Where omega-3 and sesame lignans appear in the research
EPA and DHA are the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids most extensively studied in cardiovascular research. They are structural components of cell membranes, including those of endothelial cells, and the body cannot make them in meaningful amounts, so they come from the diet, mainly oily fish, or from supplementation. Sesamin is a lignan found in sesame seed, reviewed in the scientific literature for antioxidant activity.
A 2023 study in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology looked at the two together, exposing cultured human vascular endothelial cells to DHA and EPA, to sesame lignan, and to the combination, then measuring markers of endothelial function including nitric oxide production. The combination produced a larger response in those markers than either compound alone. This is cell-culture work: it describes cells in a dish, and does not establish what happens in the human body.
Everyday factors that influence blood lipids
Lipid values respond to an overall pattern of living, not to any single food.
- Total intake of added sugar, refined carbohydrates and fried foods
- Vegetables, legumes and whole grains as sources of dietary fiber
- Regular activity, commonly guided at around 150 minutes of moderate movement per week
- Adequate sleep, smoking status and alcohol intake
- Regular check-ups, so changes are tracked rather than guessed at
Nutrition, movement, sleep and medical follow-up work as a set. If a lipid panel comes back outside the reference range, that is a conversation to have with a doctor. A supplement is a source of nutrients within an overall diet, not a substitute for that conversation or for prescribed treatment.
