Weak Skin Barrier: Why Everything Stings and Irritates Your Skin
Skin that stings, reddens, or suddenly reacts to products it used to tolerate is usually showing that its outer layer has lost some capacity to hold water in and keep irritants out. That layer is the skin barrier, and it depends on lipids — particularly ceramides — packed between the cells of the stratum corneum. Hydration and comfort both follow from how intact that structure is.
What dry skin is
Dry skin feels tight and rough and can look flaky or scaly, sometimes with fine cracks, redness, or itching. It occurs when the skin's natural moisturizing factors and surface lipids are depleted, so the skin cannot retain water at its usual level. Water then escapes more readily through the surface, a measurable phenomenon called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. Lower hydration and higher TEWL are the two numbers researchers use to describe barrier condition.
Where it comes from
From the inside, the skin produces fewer surface lipids with age and their composition changes, reducing water-holding capacity. From the outside, dry or cold air, air-conditioned rooms, hot showers, harsh surfactants, and repeated contact with irritants remove lipids faster than the skin replaces them. Once the barrier is thinned, ingredients that were previously unremarkable — fragrance, acids, active serums — can sting. That is usually a barrier issue, not a reaction to one specific product.
Practical care for a compromised barrier
- Wash with lukewarm rather than hot water, and keep showers short.
- Choose a gentle, low-lather cleanser around pH 5, without fragrance.
- Use a moisturizer with humectants and barrier lipids such as urea, glycerin, and ceramides, and pause fragrance, vitamin C serums, and acid exfoliants while skin feels reactive.
- Apply it within a few minutes of towel-drying, while skin is still slightly damp.
- Include dietary omega-3 sources such as oily fish, plus vitamins A, C, and E from a varied diet.
Ceramides from the inside
Ceramides can also be supplied through the diet. Ceramosides is a wheat-derived polar lipid extract produced in France that supplies glucosylceramide, a plant precursor the body converts into ceramides in the skin. It also contains digalactosyl diacylglycerides, or DGDG, which improve glucosylceramide absorption. Niacinamide, vitamin B3, is often paired with it in supplement formulations and contributes to the maintenance of normal skin.
What the clinical research measured
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2023 examined the wheat extract in 72 women aged 30 to 60 with dry skin, confirmed by a corneometer reading below 50. Participants were split into three groups — placebo, 70 mg per day of the oil form, and 30 mg per day of the powder form — and took the supplement for 112 days, with measurements at days 0, 14, 28, and 56. Results for the oil form:
- Cheek hydration, measured with a Corneometer CM 825, was 9 percent higher at day 14 and 12 percent higher at day 56 versus placebo, and 10 and 13 percent higher versus baseline.
- Transepidermal water loss, measured with a Tewameter TM300, was 8.9 percent lower at day 14 and 14 percent lower at day 56 versus placebo, and 9.2 and 15 percent lower versus baseline.
- More than 80 percent of participants reported satisfaction with their skin condition after 56 days.
These are group averages from a single study, and individual results vary. Hydration and TEWL describe skin surface condition rather than skin disease.
A weakened barrier responds to consistency rather than intensity: gentle cleansing, regular moisturizing, and fewer actives while skin is reactive. Skin problems that are severe, persistent, spreading, weeping, or painful should be assessed by a dermatologist.
