Comparing Omega-3 Formulas: Which One Is Right for You?

Two bottles both labelled fish oil can differ in four measurable ways: chemical form, EPA and DHA per serving, source and purification, and any added nutrients. Those four are what you are actually comparing.

Omega-3 supplements are not interchangeable. Two bottles can both say "fish oil" and still differ in four measurable ways: the chemical form of the fatty acids, the amount of EPA and DHA per serving, the oil source and purification, and whether other nutrients are included. Those four variables are what you are actually comparing.

What the label is really telling you

The most common point of confusion is total fish oil versus actual omega-3 content. A capsule listed as 1,000 mg of fish oil may contain 300 mg of combined EPA and DHA, or 600 mg, or more, depending on how concentrated the oil is. The figure worth reading is declared EPA and DHA per daily serving, not total oil weight.

Chemical form: TG, EE and rTG

The form is a property of how the oil was processed.

  • Natural triglyceride (TG) is the form found in whole fish. It is not concentrated, so EPA and DHA levels are limited by what the fish contains.
  • Ethyl ester (EE) is produced when fatty acids are separated from their glycerol backbone during concentration. This step makes high EPA and DHA percentages possible, and EE concentrates are widely used, including in prescription omega-3 medicines.
  • Re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) reattaches concentrated ethyl esters to a glycerol backbone, restoring a triglyceride structure while keeping the higher concentration.

A 2023 randomized study in PLOS ONE compared these forms directly, measuring how much EPA and DHA appeared in red blood cell membranes among people taking triglyceride-form versus ethyl ester concentrates, and reported measurable differences between them. This is a measured property of the oil form under study conditions, not a different outcome for any individual.

Source, purity and added nutrients

Omega-3 oils come from small cold-water fish such as anchovy and sardine, from tuna, from krill, or from microalgae in plant-based formulas. Because concentration also concentrates whatever else is in the raw material, purification matters, and freshness is assessed through oxidation markers such as peroxide value. Vitamin E is present in most formulas because polyunsaturated oils oxidize easily and tocopherol acts as an antioxidant inside the capsule. Some formulas also add sesamin, a sesame seed lignan studied for antioxidant activity.

How to compare two products side by side

  • Combined EPA and DHA in milligrams per daily serving, not per capsule
  • The stated form: TG, rTG, EE, phospholipid (krill) or algal
  • Oil source, purification method and any freshness testing described
  • Number and size of capsules in a daily serving
  • Additional ingredients and the reason they are there

Capsule size and serving count matter more than they look, because consistency is largely mechanical. Omega-3 is fat-soluble and is generally taken with food. There is no single formula that suits everyone and no ranking that holds across the board; the useful question is which specifications match your priorities, and which product you will realistically take every day.
