What does the 40 mg in Bon-Activ UC-II 40 mg refer to?
It refers to the weight of the UC-II raw material per serving, not to the amount of undenatured type II collagen inside it. In the published research, 40 mg of the raw material provided 10.4 ± 1.3 mg of undenatured type II collagen. The 30-tablet pack is 14.1 g net.
What is UC-II?
UC-II is undenatured type II collagen, extracted from chicken sternal cartilage by a low-temperature process that keeps its natural, undenatured structure intact. 'Undenatured' is a description of process: the raw material has not been through high heat or enzymatic digestion. It is therefore a different ingredient from ordinary collagen peptides, which are digested type I collagen.
How is UC-II different from regular collagen peptides?
They differ in collagen type, in the state of the molecule and in the scale of the dose. Collagen peptides are hydrolysed type I collagen used at gram scale; UC-II is type II collagen kept in its natural, undenatured state and used at milligram scale, where 40 mg of raw material provides about 10 mg of undenatured type II collagen. The two sit at separate entries in the Thai FDA annex, items 342 and 344.
When should I take UC-II?
Follow the directions printed on the label. Because the properties of this raw material depend on that natural structure staying intact, heat during manufacturing and storage matters, and the product should be kept away from heat. The dose is at milligram scale, unlike collagen peptides, which are used at gram scale.
