Research on how visible light interacts with skin focuses on pigmentation and on collagen and elastin, and the practical response is the one that already applies to UV — daily broad-spectrum sun protection and consistent care.

What blue light actually is

Blue light occupies roughly the 415 to 455 nanometer range of the visible spectrum and combines with other wavelengths to form the white light of sunlight. It also comes from LED and fluorescent lighting and from phone, computer, and television displays. Its short wavelength carries more energy than longer visible wavelengths, which is why it is discussed alongside ultraviolet. Surveys suggest people in Thailand average well over five hours a day on screens, though what a screen delivers to your face is a small fraction of a few minutes outdoors.

What the research looks at

Visible light, including blue wavelengths, has been shown in laboratory and clinical studies to stimulate melanin production in skin, an effect more pronounced in deeper skin tones, so pigmentation and evenness of tone are the outcomes most often studied. Researchers also examine oxidative stress in dermal cells, where collagen and elastin are the structural proteins responsible for firmness and elasticity. Blue light is separately studied in relation to sleep timing, since light in this range is part of how circadian signaling responds to day and night.

Practical steps

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily; tinted formulations containing iron oxides also attenuate visible light.
  • Take breaks from close screen work and look at something distant every 20 minutes or so.
  • Lower screen brightness in dim rooms and use warm-tone display settings after dark.
  • Wind down screen use before bed to support a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Eat a varied diet with vegetables and fruits as dietary sources of antioxidants.

Where collagen and elastin fit

Collagen and elastin are the two main structural proteins of the dermis: collagen provides tensile strength, elastin provides recoil. Both are made by fibroblasts and produced in smaller amounts as we age. Supplements containing collagen and elastin peptides supply them in a hydrolyzed, readily absorbed form. Vitamin C is often included because it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.

What the evidence currently supports

Controlled studies that irradiate skin with LED blue light at high doses report measurable pigmentation changes, particularly in deeper skin phototypes. A 2022 systematic review that looked specifically at blue light from electronic devices reached a different conclusion for everyday use: at the levels screens emit, it was not classified as a skin photoaging hazard. Both findings are worth holding at once - the wavelength does something to skin under laboratory conditions, and a phone is not a laboratory light source.

Screens are part of modern life, and the sensible approach is unremarkable: daily sun protection, regular breaks, and a consistent sleep routine.
